Collection of batteries at HSY’s recycling points will end at the turn of the year

The collection of batteries at the recycling points launched by the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority HSY will end on 31 December 2011. HSY will still, however, provide over one hundred recycling points throughout the metropolitan area and in Kirkkonummi. The recycling points will continue to provide separate containers for the collection of glass, paper, cardboard, small metal items and clothes.

Recser Oy, a producer association that organises the recycling, has been responsible for collecting batteries since autumn 2009. HSY signed a contract with Recser Oy for collecting batteries at HSY's own recycling points. This contract will terminate at the turn of the year. As a result, the collection of batteries will end at the recycling points of HSY.

HSY will continue to collect batteries and small accumulators free of charge in hazardous waste containers as well as at Sortti stations and Munkinmäki waste station in Kirkkonummi. The collection vehicles of HSY waste management, which tour around the metropolitan area and Kirkkonummi during the springtime, also accept batteries and small accumulators.

The HSY containers for hazardous waste are mainly located in the yards of service stations and stores. The recycling point search engine provides information concerning the locations of all containers. Used batteries and small accumulators can also be brought to the stores that sell them.

Due to the harmful and toxic substances that are contained in these products, it is important that they are disposed of via the collection points. The batteries and small accumulators that are collected will be recycled and the materials in them will be recovered for the use of the metal industry. Disposal of these among unsorted waste is prohibited.
