Hazardous Waste

Hazardous waste, in other words waste which is unsafe, means materials or objects that are withdrawn from circulation and may cause special harm or danger to health or the environment.

The following items are hazardous wastes:

  • energy saving light bulbs and other fluorescent tubes
  • mercury thermometers and unused pharmaceuticals
  • junk batteries, waste oils, oil filters and other oily wastes
  • solvents, such as turpentine, thinner, acetone and solvent based detergents   
  • non-hardening paints, glues, lacquers and wood-protective liquids and impregnants
  • aerosol bottles (spilling and fizzing, with a dangerous sign attached on the side) 
  • impregnated wood
  • alkaline washing and cleaning detergents
  • pesticides and disinfectants
  • strong acids, such as sulphuric acid
  • halon fire extinguishers, gas containers and other pressure packs  

Dry-cell batteries and portable batteries may be returned to the stores that sell these products. The contract with Recser Oy, that organises the recycling of batteries, will terminate 31.12.2011 as a result, the collection of batteries will end at the recycling points of HSY, but will continue at the HSY containers for hazardous waste, Sortti stations and Munkinmäki waste station.
