Biowaste and Garden Waste

Organic, decomposing, solid materials are biowaste.

Biowaste MAY CONTAIN:

  • food scraps
  • spoiled food ingredients
  • peels, rinds and parings
  • solid fats
  • coffee grounds and tea leaves
  • tea bags and filter papers
  • kitchen papers
  • serviettes and tissues
  • parts of plants and wilted flowers
  • wood-based pet litter (e.g. sawdust, pellets)

Let the food scraps drip dry and pour liquids into a drain, so that the debris is not too moist.

Put cooking and salad oils in tightly closed plastic bottle and dispose of them among unsorted waste.

Biowaste MAY NOT CONTAIN:

  • edible oils and other liquid fats > dispose of these in a tightly closed plastic container among unsorted waste.
  • liquids, soups and sauces >  into the drain
  • diapers, sanitary pads and other such kinds of hygienic products (not even the biodegradables) > dispose of among unsorted wastes; plastic wrappings and bags > dispose of among unsorted wastes or in the energy fraction in the container for plastic bags.
  • milk and juice cartons >  into recyclable carton
  • pharmaceuticals > take to pharmacies
  • cat litter (such as sand, clay, or bentonite) > among unsorted waste
  • cat or dog faeces > among unsorted waste
  • chewing gum, ashes, cigarette ends > among unsorted waste

What Happens to the Biowaste

Biowaste and garden waste are composted at the HSY waste treatment centre of Ämmässuo in Espoo. Twigs and brushwood, which are collected separately, are chipped into the stabilizing material of the composting mass. The ripened compost may be used as raw material for soil or as such for soil improvement.
