Waste-Fired Power Plant Project - From Mixed Waste to Energy
The reclamation of mixed waste, generated by households, will be initiated in the catchment area of HSY in the near future. Vantaa Energy Ltd will erect a waste-fired power plant that fulfils the set environmental requirements at Långmossebergen in Vantaa, on a site located at the intersection of the Outer Ring Road (Kehä III) and highway 7 (Porvoonväylä). The building activities will be concentrated on the period of 2011-2014.
The waste-fired power plant will be effective in controlling the climate change, as the plant will reduce environmental hazards and the amount of mixed waste that would otherwise be disposed of in landfills. HSY will continue its work in reducing the waste amounts and increasing the sorting of wastes.
Vantaa Energy submitted an application to the Uusimaa Regional Environment Centre in May 2008, in regards to environmental permission for a waste-fired power plant. The final decision on this matter will be made at the turn of 2009-2010.
The waste-fired power plant will be erected in Vantaa as Vantaa Energy Ltd won the competitive bidding concerning the project. The multi-phased project was decided upon by the board of YTV (nowadays HSY) on 19.12.2008.
An environmental impact assessment (EIA) preceded the environmental permission application for the waste power plant. The EIA procedures were conducted in four possible site locations during 2007. The materials and information on the progress concerning the EIA procedures are available on these web pages.
