Tools for mitigating climate change

The Petra waste benchmarking system and the Martti material flow accounting system are tools for monitoring material efficiency. Efficient use of materials and recovery of waste materials are climate change mitigation measures referred to in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area climate strategy.
Waste flows in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area are monitored through the Martti material flow accounting system, which gathers statistics on the annual waste volumes generated and received in various sectors.

The Petra waste benchmarking system is a free service enabling a business or public administrative agency in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area to use existing indicators for monitoring its waste recycling rate and total waste volumes in relation to staffing levels, turnover or output.

All of the businesses and organisations that submit waste data to the Petra system are entered in an annual competition to select the Natural Resources Saver of the Year. This award seeks to encourage businesses and organisations to reduce the quantity of waste generated, thereby improving their material efficiency.
