HSY - Practical measures in the urban environment

Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority is a regional authority providing environmental services for residents and companies in the Helsinki area. Our principal duties comprise water and waste management as well as providing regional information services. HSY began its operations on 1 January 2010.

HSY is the most prominent environmental body in Finland. It brings together the waterworks of Espoo, Helsinki, Kauniainen and Vantaa as well as the waste management services and the regional and environmental information services provided by the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV). HSY employs approximately 750 people.

Our goal is to ensure that environmentally sound decisions and actions can be made effortlessly by for all the residents of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. We provide up-to-date information on, for example, the sorting and reduction of waste as well as the economical use of water.

The cornerstones of our operations are practical measures in the urban environment:

  • world-leading water quality 
  • reliable wastewater purification 
  • exemplary waste collection and transport 
  • information on air quality and environmental matters that is made available to all.

Our online service provides easily accessible and up-to-date information on the environmental services provided in the metropolitan area. We are constantly developing our online service to further enhance its usability and convenience.

The Finnish language version of the website of Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority was published on 1st January 2010. We set up limited versions of the site in Swedish and English.
